“Mac rules and PCs suck!” When I joined Hemels in the Nineties I’d led a relatively sheltered life when it came to computers. DOS, Word Perfect and later Windows and Word ruled my little computer world so it was a rude awakening to learn how Mac-minded and fervently anti-PC the publishing environment was.

Our Magazine

The magazine for people of ARCADIS

Advice

ARCADIS’ staff magazine has always been an important communication tool, providing internal information as the company has grown around the world. The magazine functions as one of ARCADIS’ principal means of communicating information about the company’s work, strategy, clients, people and culture to its employees. At the end of 2009 ARCADIS issued a pitch to turn the employee magazine into a robust multi-channel communications tool that supports firm wide objectives and helps to grow a single company culture. Hemels Customer Media presented a concept with updated and improved content, a tightened editorial focus, a new digital component, and revamped design. Because the magazine is not only for the staff, but also made by the staff the name Our Magazine was chosen. In May 2010 the first issue of the magazine was launched around the ARCADIS globe.

Creation

With more than 320 offices in 13 countries, different operating companies and new acquisitions, the company is rapidly growing. One of the objectives is to bring all 15,000 employees together and make them feel part of one ARCADIS. With features such as Around the World in 15 Answers and Our Views, the aim is to give a voice to employees wherever they work in the organization. Each issue is themed, focusing the content to a particular topic that affects the company worldwide and ties in with relevant issues. For example, the second issue’s theme addresses the new company strategy.

Direction

The magazine is made by the staff of ARCADIS, with guidance of Hemels Customer Media. Hemels works in close collaboration with the editorial board, made up from volunteer members from eight countries, to produce Our Magazine. HEMELS Publishers is in constant touch with the editor in chief and editorial board members to ensure that all the countries are represented. After consultation, the appropriate approach for each article is decided. Graphic support for every article is also decided in collaboration with the Hemels art director.
