Working at Hemels
For each and every one of its clients Customer Media puts together a team of professionals, comprising a publisher, managing editor and an art director, along with production co-ordinators and a printing procurement specialist. Every day, the members of this team work together enthusiastically to make effective customer relationship media. It’s hard work. Deadlines have to be met, budgets have to be adhered to, readers’ needs have to be satisfied, clients’ interests have to be served, and, of course, beautiful creative products have to be made.
But working at Hemels also means working in an inspirational environment, where a pleasant and collegial working atmosphere is key. It’s an environment that’s tolerant to the occasional mistake, because there must also be room to learn and develop, through our new Hemels Academy for example. At Hemels we are open to new ideas, whether they surface during a serious meeting, or when our creative reserves are collectively replenished at lunchtime.

Annemarie Veen, editor-in-chief
“We work as a team”
“I’ve been making customer magazines for over 13 years now, the last five here at Hemels as an editor-in-chief. And I derive great pleasure doing it! True, it can get very hectic at times, but stress is something we endure together. We work as a team. Irrespective of whether we’re working towards the completion of an important pitch, or striving to finalise a magazine before the deadline is upon us, the ‘suffering’ is shared. Fortunately there’s no shortage of fun moments and plenty of laughs.”
Doriene Koot, designer
“We keep learning from one another”
“What’s so good about working at Hemels? You can just be yourself here and, as colleagues, we are genuinely interested in one another. After a busy working week most of us hang around on a Friday afternoon to kick off the weekend with a social drink. As a designer at Hemels I have plenty to challenge me, like making a new magazine from scratch, for example. It’s also rewarding to work so closely with the art director; we keep learning from one another.”
Natasja van Eck, copy editor
“I contribute to all aspects of a magazine’s production”
“As a copy editor at Hemels I’m more than an insignificant link in a big chain. I get to contribute to all aspects of a magazine’s production: from deciding on the content to thinking of a catchy title for an article. I even have a say in the layout, which means I have extensive contact with the art director and graphic designers. I’m really proud when the finished article is printed because I know why certain choices were made and how the magazine has been produced.”
Ellen de Groot, managing editor
“As proud as punch”
“From my very first day at Hemels I felt really at home. ‘At home’ in the sense of making customer magazines, and because I immediately felt comfortable among my new colleagues. Among other titles, we make U&UWV, the monthly personnel magazine of UWV, the Dutch social security organisation. We work together with the UWV editorial team, which is scattered throughout the country. Every issue is a huge challenge but we’re always as proud as punch when ‘our magazine’ is once again safely delivered. The Hemels team feels jointly responsible and that’s our strength.”
Klaas Jan Woudsma, art director
“International clients, beautiful magazines”
“Since Hemels’ inception, more than 15 years ago, I’ve grown along with the company. We started out back then with a modest, but enthusiastic team. But with its national and international client portfolios today’s Hemels cannot be compared with then. However, I still feel as much at home here today as I did back then. I work with an enthusiastic team, we make beautiful magazines, and as art director working mainly on international titles I’ve picked up so much from so many different cultures over the years.”
